HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The History of Idaho Springs begins with Andrew Jackson’s attempts to keep warm on a cold night in January 1859. Jackson was on a hunting mission in the mountains with his friends. While he was willing to explore further, his friends felt they had traveled enough. Jackson set off alone up to the junction of Chicago Creek and Clear Creek, where the history of Idaho begins.

He lit a bonfire to keep warm through the night. The heat from the fire melted the frozen sand, revealing a possible goldmine. Using his hunting knife, he dug beneath the sand and discovered gold. His discovery led to the Colorado Gold Rush and the establishment of a gold mining town as more miners settled in the area.

In 1893, the miners set up the Argo Mill, a state-of-the-art milling facility, and the Argo Tunnel to drain the mines. Though it’s no longer operational, the Argo Mill and tunnel are among the historical attractions you can visit during your stay in Idaho Springs.
